"For me, I am driven by two main philosophies: Know more today about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you." -Neil deGrasse Tyson
“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
“Meditations” Book X, Marcus Aurelius (121-180)
I know this won’t be a very popular opinion to see on tumblr, but here goes.
It’s a nice sentiment to say that the U.S. shouldn’t be the police of the world, and that it’s not our country, so it’s not our problem, and it’s easy to let action be held back by debates over specifics of foreign policy, but the bottom line remains: There are people suffering in Syria, and plenty of other places around the world. Physically, and emotionally, these people will be traumatized for the rest of their lives, if they even survive the conflict. I’m not here to argue that the U.S. should march into Syria like another Iraq, and occupy the place and spend hundreds of billions of dollars to sit on the country and the region for another 10 years. I’m just saying, Russia isn’t going to do anything to help the situation. China isn’t. Their governments have thrice vetoed sanctions on the country at the U.N. I’m just saying, these people are our fellow humans, and it’s sad that they’re being left to this fate.
“I have concluded through careful, empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me. Keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less then I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think and they still love me and I’ve concluded after careful consideration that this person keeping score is me.” - Adam Savage
